In 1996, Daniel Flannery and his company, Scenographic Designs, created Adventure Slots, an innovative themed-gaming environment for the Hollywood Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. Flannery served as the project’s principal designer, leading the transformation of a conventional casino floor into an immersive cinematic adventure that united gaming, theatrical storytelling, architecture, scenic design, lighting, music, multimedia, mechanical animation, and special effects.
The attraction encompassed more than 200 slot machines within an elaborately staged world inspired by Hollywood adventure films. Guests entered through a mysterious stone portal and encountered displays of celebrated motion-picture artifacts, including Indiana Jones’s jacket, hat, and whip. At the center of the environment stood a 24-foot-high ancient temple and monumental stone idol whose glowing eyes and commanding voice introduced a synchronized spectacle of fire, water, light, and music.
Throughout the attraction, gaming was integrated with theatrical discoveries. A runaway mine car raced along an elevated track before overturning and releasing souvenir coins. A dense jungle contained a crashed airplane, an enormous ape, and the remains of an unfortunate explorer, while an Elephant Arch supported the Ark of the Covenant. Architectural elements cast from molds associated with such motion pictures as Spartacus and Ben-Hur contributed to the scale and cinematic authenticity of the environment.
Adventure Slots was among the earliest projects to treat a casino gaming floor as a fully integrated themed-entertainment experience. Flannery’s design went beyond decorative theming: the environment unfolded through movement, sound, lighting, special effects, artifacts, and guest interaction, creating an ongoing sense of exploration around the gaming activity. The project was featured on the April 1996 cover of Casino Player magazine under the headline “The Thrill Ride.”
Samuel G. Bocchicchio, Corporate Vice President of Design for Hollywood Casino Corporation, credited Flannery and his Scenographic Designs team with creating what he described as “the best casino square footage in the industry.” He specifically praised their professionalism, work ethic, and artistic abilities, confirming that the project was delivered on schedule and within budget. Drawing upon fourteen years in the casino-entertainment industry, Bocchicchio characterized Flannery’s team as the most qualified group of professionals with whom he had worked.
In 1998, the Themed Entertainment Association honored Adventure Slots with a Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement, recognizing its exceptional accomplishment within a limited budget. Flannery was formally identified by the association as a key member of the award-winning project team. Adventure Slots remains an important example of his ability to bring the scale, theatricality, technical coordination, and emotional impact of a major entertainment attraction into a new commercial setting.
